Betty Jo Womble Overton passed away on Nov. 18, 2015.

Born in Hickman County, TN, on Nov. 14, 1927, she was the daughter of Marion Everett Womble, Sr., and Jo Stella Hickman Womble. When she was in the eighth grade, Betty and her family moved to Dickson, TN, which she has ever since considered to be home. After graduating from Dickson High as valedictorian, Betty spent several years working for the phone company. Following marriage to Stanley Overton in 1948, the couple moved to Nashville and had two sons: Dick, born in 1952, and Jim, born in 1954.

Betty was an exceptional mother and homemaker who also adored spending time with her extended Womble family. After her sons left home, she decided to pursue higher education -- and graduated with honors in Nursing from the University of Tennessee at Nashville. In addition to having a lively mind, she had talented fingers. Long an engaged craftsperson, she decided to share her talents with the world, winning numerous blue ribbons at the Tennessee State Fair for her exceptional quilts and craft works. In 2000, she moved to Durham, NC, largely to assist in the raising of her granddaughter, Kara Mountcastle. She was as excellent as a grandmother as she had been at all the other commitments in her life.

Betty was preceded in death by her sister Martha Jean Dawes and her husband Jim Dawes, as well as her brother Marion Womble, Jr., and his wife Katherine Womble.

She is survived by her sister Peggy Woolsey, to whom she was extremely close, as she was to Peggy’s late husband Andy Woolsey. She is also survived by her brother Don Womble and his wife Evelyn Womble. Betty was also close to Stanley’s brothers, Wilson and Ray Lee Overton. Being almost as devoted to being an aunt as a mother, she doted on all her nieces and nephews: Marion and Katherine’s children Gary, Hal and Robin; Don and Evelyn’s children Donnie, Marty and Keith; and Peggy and Andy’s children Bryce, Debbie and Eddie. She will remain precious in the memory of her son Dick and his wife Katherine Setser, and her son Jim and his wife Mary Mountcastle, as well as their daughter Katherine Mountcastle.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015 from 12noon until time of service.  A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 2:30pm at the Taylor Funeral Home.  Place of rest will be in the Dickson County Memorial Gardens.

Betty requested that friends and family make donations to one of two favorite organizations: Duke HomeCare & Hospice, Office of Development, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 201, Durham, NC 27704; or the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
