Reed Hill Evans, age 82 of Dickson, died on January 7, 2016.  Visitation will be held on Monday, January 11, 2016 from 5pm until 8pm at the Taylor Funeral Home.  A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 11am at the New Hope Baptist Church.  Visitation will be held at the church from 10am until time of service.  Place of rest will be in the Dickson County Memorial Gardens.

Reed Hill Evans was born in Maggart, Tennessee a part of rural Smith County, on January 30, 1933 to loving parents Robert Lee and Vera Bessie Evans whom he was preceded in death. Mr. Evans became a respected administrator, teacher, and coach in the Dickson County Public School System. His career spanned over 40 years impacting and molding the lives of numerous young people.

He was married to the late Mary Ann Neal Evans for 54 years. Many of you knew that you rarely saw one of them without the other one close. She provided support for him and the family, often time without expecting any acknowledgement or credit. Her reward was seeing him succeed and watching the smiles on her family's faces.

He leaves to mourn in his passing; two sons Aaron Evans (Wanda) , Daron Evans(Stephanie); eight grandchildren Shawn Evans, Antonio Smith, Brittany Schrader, Dara Evans, Akendra Evans, Daron (D.J) Evans, Abril Evans, Marissa Evans; three great grandchildren Avana Smith, Nikki Rawles, Aubrianna Hardy; one sister, Shirley Tellis; one uncle Harding Strawther; and loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife Mary Ann Neal Evans; daughters Sharon Evans and Karen (Red) Evans Smith; sisters Hattie Evans Carter and Sybil Evans Smith; brothers Arble Evans and Robert Evans Jr.

His love of education began at an early age, motivated by his parents and a special grandfather who was a sharecropper. He admired his grandfather Cal, hanging on to his every word about life. He was taught the values of education, strong family ethics, and the love of God. Living in a rural area, education was a challenge, a desire within, not a right. If you have a lot of time on your hands, let him tell you about his long walks/ journeys to and from elementary school. High school presented a different challenge due to the fact that there was no public African-American High School in Smith County. So, it was decided Mr. Evans would move to Lebanon, Tennessee to live with an aunt to attend high school and receive his High School diploma. After his High School graduation, Mr. Evans was drafted into The United States Army to serve his country. He received specialized training and was assigned to a medical unit. While in the Army stationed in Georgia, he was first exposed to integration, as one night out of the blue he recalls being reassigned to barracks which both African Americans and White Americans shared on base.

After completing his military duty and service to his country, he returned Smith County and the Lebanon area. He immediately applied and was accepted to Tennessee A & I, now Tennessee State University.

In the summer of 1959, Mr. Evans relocated to Dickson as a coach and teacher at Hampton High School, a school for African-American students. Mr. Evans remained at this position for 5 years until the school closed due to desegregation and the sweeping Civil Rights movement. After the closing of Hampton High School, Mr. Evans assumed a position at Charlotte Elementary School, teaching and coaching for 5 years.

In 1970, Mr. Evans was hired at the Old Dickson High School. In 1973, the New Dickson County Senior High School was opened where he became a teacher, assistant football coach, assistant basketball coach and head baseball coach. In 1974, he became Assistant Principal of Dickson Jr. High School. Mr. Evans remained at that position until 1978. He then became Principal of Dickson Jr. High in the fall of 1978. Mr. Evans remained in that position until his retirement from the school system in the summer of 1998.

The most important thing in Deacon Evans life was GOD. Deacon Evans has been an active member of New Hope Baptist Church shortly after arriving in Dickson.

After his retirement, he became co-owner of Behind The Time Antique Shop, with his wife. He was an avid collector of glassware, furniture, old coins, and dolls.
