Funeral services for Chrystine Phillips Walton, age 104, of Dickson will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Jimmy Noland officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday from 4 until 8 with an Eastern Star service (open to the public) at 7:30 p.m. She died Sunday, February 11, 2018 at her home. For those desiring, memorials may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospitals or Relay For Life.
Born in Flatwoods, Tennessee, Chrystine was the daughter of the late Woodfin B. and Nellie Easley Phillips. She received her early education in Oklahoma before moving with her family to Dickson when she was in the 7th or 8th grade. The last surviving member of her class, Chrystine graduated from Dickson High School, Class of 1931. She received an Associate of Arts degree in accounting from David Lipscomb College. She taught school for one year (only!) at the Frazier School in Hickman Co. Then she went to work for the former Vultee Corporation where she learned to maintenance military planes. As World War II escalated, she went to Millington, Tennessee, and continued in military plane maintenance as a Civil Service worker. She was small enough that she could crawl into the nose of the plane to maintenance it. She never wanted to be known as “Rosy the Riveter”; she said she did not build the planes: she was the one that kept them flying!

Chrystine was first married to Mack Walton until his death in 1943. In 1950, she married Lawrence Walton until his death in 1971. In 1972, she joined the Order of the Eastern Star, a sister organization to the Masonic Lodge. She loved traveling to other Chapters of the OES across the state of Tennessee. She attended triennial sessions of General Grand Chapter, the international branch of OES. But no chapter was more important to her than her home chapter, Dickson #291, OES. She served in any capacity where she was needed and was Worthy Matron, its chief officer, several times. Chrystine was a people person and was known in Eastern Star circles from one end of the state to the other. If you mentioned “going,” Chrystine was ready! It never got too early, too late, too hot, or too cold or too far—she was ready to go.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Willie Thomas Phillips, Mary Nell Shaw, Mantie Herndon, Hattie Farmer, and Foy Phillips. She loved her family and was proud of her heritage.

Survivors include two sisters, Edyth Hayes, Cumberland Furnace, and Freida Primm, Dickson; special niece, Melinda Muraca, Dickson; special nephew, John Primm, Dickson; a host of other nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great- grand nieces and nephews, great-great-grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
