Joseph Hernandez, age 86 of Dickson passed from this life on Monday, May 13, 2019. He was born in Port Huron, Michigan to the late Max and Paula Hernandez on August 15, 1932. He bravely served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Hernandez was an honorable man that took on many roles including that of a veteran, hairstylist, business owner, husband, mentor, father, and grandfather.

He spent the first part of his life in Michigan where he owned Suburban Salon, a beauty salon in Dearborn, Michigan. Many times, he would open his home to troubled youth as he took a one-on-one approach to mentor them and get them back on their feet.

When Joseph moved to Dickson, he and his family were accepted and taken in for who they were and never judged for being different. He spent 25 years employed at the K-Mart in Dickson working in the Lawn and Garden department, where many people knew him as “Gentle Jesus”. His family also operated the Nibble Nook restaurant in Dickson where many former employees of Goodlark Hospital would gather at lunchtime to watch TV and enjoy a great meal. One of his ultimate goals in life was to touch as many lives as he could.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Jamie Scott Hernandez and Todd J. Hernandez; his brothers, Don Hernandez, Raul Silva, and Max Hernandez, Jr.; his sisters, Mary DeLeary and Rosie Benivedes; and one grandchild, Nicole Lynn Houghton.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Sarah Jane Nolen Hernandez; his daughter, Lisi Hernandez; his grandchildren, Amy Hernandez, Lisa Hernandez, Carl Wayne Neathammer III, and Devon Crumley; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
