Vance David Smith, Sr. age 81 of White Bluff, TN died on June 3, 2020.  For those desiring, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Smith was born December 25, 1938 in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, a small community located on a bluegrass music trail known as “The Crooked Road” that passes through the mountains in Southwest Virginia.  He served his Country as a paratrooper in the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell.  From there, he made his home in White Bluff where he owned a junkyard, raced at the Nashville Fairgrounds (#3), owned an ESSO gas station, and graduated as a Residential Architectural Draftsman where he worked in the sheet metal industry, auto body and lastly as an insurance adjuster.  He was a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and lifetime member of the American Legion.   Being community minded with such friendly and kind nature, Vance was elected and served as the mayor of White Bluff, TN.  His true love was from his roots…music, and his “crooked road” led him with his banjo to the Grand Old Hatchery where he entertained for decades.  In 1997 he became the operator of the Hatchery.  The Grand Old Hatchery brought joy to Vance as he brought life to downtown Dickson with its amateur and up and coming stars.   Today, the legacy of the Hatchery remains open thanks to his son, Vance, Jr., and the Grand Old Hatchery band members.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. and Bettie Mae Anderson Smith; his sister, Iris Horton; his brother, Lindsay “Clyde” Smith; his brothers-in-law Joseph Horton, Reford Stanley, William Caffacos; sister-in-law Josie Smith; and his children’s mother, Nell Smith Adams.

Mr. Vance Smith is survived by his companion and friend, Shirley “Gramby” Brooks; his children, Betty “Libby” Gill (Jim Anderson); Carolyn Lazenby (Bob), Vance D. Smith, Jr. (Carrie Halcomb), and Donna Mensh (Spencer); his brothers and sisters, Buford Smith (Andrea), Cecil “Zeke” Smith (the late Josie), Hazel Burkhart (Barney), Mildred Caffacos (the late William), Winford Smith (Cenna), and sister-in-law Jo Smith (the late Clyde).  Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Vance “David” Smith, III (Stephanie), Alec Lazenby, Erica Gossett (Corey), Daren Miller, Katie Lazenby, Chris Smith, Kaelynn Waggoner (Daniel),  Gage Cheeves (Alivia), Heather Hightower (Eric), Austin Lazenby, Morgan Malugin, Nic and Tim Malugin;  7 great grandchildren, Oliver, Ethan, Neeson, Ezra, Aylo, Walker and Paxton, and several nieces and nephews.

His family would like to thank his caretakers for all their help during the past year and also everyone for their kind condolences.
