Funeral services will be Thursday July 23, 2020 at 11 AM from the Chapel of Taylor Funeral Home. Place of rest will be in the Dickson Union Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday July 22nd from 4 to 8 PM with an Eastern Star and Masonic service at 7 PM and on Thursday from 9 AM until time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that respects to his memory be made by making donations to the Vanleer School Library.
On Sunday July 19, 2020 Clayborn David Gilmore opened a gate on his family farm in this world and walked into the arms of his loving wife of 64 years, Peggy Anne Milam Gilmore, in the next world. He joyfully joined hands once again with his father and mother, William Frances Clayborn Gilmore and Dorothy Winona Spradlin Gilmore. David was born on that same farm 85 years ago on June 5, 1935. He was a compassionate, thoughtful, and intelligent man who dedicated his life in service of his country, his community, and his family. He was a graduate of Charlotte High School, served in the Army, attended MTSU, and earned a Masters Degree from APSU.
David started his career at Dickson County High School as a chemistry teacher. He taught at Charlotte Elementary. Then, he served as the Principal for Vanleer Elementary for 27 years. He was a member of the Eastern Star White Bluff Chapter #446, OES and Vanleer Masonic Lodge #319, F&AM for 65 years where he served as Grand Sentinel, Worthy Patron, and Worshipful Master Mason.
He was the type of man who cried unashamedly when he heard a beautiful song. He was a man who hugged his loved ones and told them he loved them every chance he got. When he stepped into eternity in his boots and blue jeans on Sunday afternoon he left a bunch of us on the other side of that fence including his son Keith Gilmore (Caroline) and daughter Karla Gilmore, four grandchildren including Heath Ellis, Preston Gilmore, Stephanie Gilmore, and Julia Gilmore Curtis (Dillon), and one great-granddaughter Brooklyn Ann Renee Ellis. There are many more nieces, nephews, and other beloved family too numerous to list here.
In his later years he was known by young people throughout the area simply as "granddaddy" and would take any who needed a grandfather as his honorary grandchildren. He taught us how to farm and he showed us how to love one another. He knew the sort of things only granddaddies know like, "keep the forked end down", "be good", and "if you can’t be good don’t get caught!". Our entire community grieves his passing and we will hold him in forever in our hearts.
If there has ever been a better farmer, a more patient teacher, or a kinder soul, we have not met them.
     We love you granddaddy!

His pall bearers are, proudly, Heath Ellis, Preston Gilmore, Dillon Curtis, Dylan Smith, Chad Logan, Jared McIllwain, Richard Sieglar (honorary), Dwight McIllwain (honorary), Earl Weaver (honorary), Dale Milam (honorary), Larry Logan (honorary).
