 Funeral services for Ruthelma Buckner Warf, age 84 of Dickson will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 from the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Bro. Harold Phillips, and Bro. Jerry Duke officiating.  Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service. She died peacefully at home Tuesday morning, December 1, 2020.

Born in Dickson, Ruthelma was the daughter of the late Elmer Thomas and Thelma Berneice Reed Buckner.  She was a 1954 graduate of Dickson High School and received her Masters from George Peabody College.  She received her EDS from Austin Peay State University.  Ruthelma’s passion and career was advocacy and education for the children of Dickson County enrolled in Special Education.  She was a pioneer for children with special needs and family services and was a founding Director of Special Education in Dickson County.  The former Warf School for Special Education was named in her honor.  She was a strong advocate for Developmental Services of Dickson County and she fought hard to see that it received necessary funding and donations to carry out its work in Dickson County. Ruthelma worked with the young children and their families in Foundations Intervention Services. In 1998 she established the Agency Family Support Program and operated it until her retirement in 2014.

Ruthelma was a member of the Dickson County Retired Teachers Association, a former member of the Red Hat Society, and as a proponent for decisions that affected Dickson County’s students, she always attended the meetings of the School Board.  She loved her church and was an active member of First Baptist Church, Dickson.  Her daughter, Helen Elizabeth “Beth” Warf preceded her in death in 1997.

Ruthelma was a kind, sweet-spirited lady that loved her community. Her gentle smile and kindness to others will always be remembered by her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Donald Warf, Dickson; a daughter, Fran Reed, Dickson; her brother, J. Dan Buckner, Dickson; and one granddaughter, Rachel Reed. Her nephew Reed Buckner.
