Phyllis Scherbon Cowell, age 83 of Kingston Springs, died October 20, 2012. A service and burial was held at 11am on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the Middle TN Veterans Cemetery. Mrs. Cowell was born March 9, 1929 in Haverill, Massachusetts. She was a Daughter of the late Sam and Anna Scherbon, immigrants from Russia. She spoke Russian and Greek as a child. She grew up on a farm in Merrimac, MA, milking cows each morning before school. During the winter months she would often ski to school. During WWII she was a certified airplane spotter. After graduation from high school, she worked as a telephone operator. She became engaged to James Cowell who was deployed with the US Navy. Her engagement ring was delivered by US Mail. She became a military housewife July 24, 1949. She was an active band mother for Princess Anne High School. The family moved to Tennessee in 1979. She became an active band mother for Harpeth High School including seamstress for the school flag core, as well as Harpeth Library Aid, substitute teacher, and assistant teacher for the special needs class. For many years she was active in the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her Husband, James Parker Cowell, January 1, 2012. She is survived by her Daughters, Sherry Payne of Kingston Springs, and Michelle Burge of Kingston Springs; Sons, Bruce Cowell of Colorado and David Cowell of New Mexico; Brother, William Scherbon of Massachusetts; 10 Grandchildren; Several Great Grandchildren; Several Nieces and Nephews.
