Joseph Malcolm Clement, Jr. (known as J. M.), a retired lawyer, died January 22, 2021, after a valiant battle with cancer and Covid-19. J.M. grew up in Dickson, TN, where he graduated high school. As a teenager he was tutored in speech and debate by Ms. Dockie Weems who also tutored his first cousin, Frank G. Clement, the former Governor of Tennessee, who was nationally known for his oratory. J. M. also became quite a speaker/orator winning many debates, speech and oratory contests in his high school and college years. His only involvement in politics was working on Governor Frank G. Clements campaigns. In later years he loved to mimic Governor Clements oratory for his friends and did a great impression.

He obtained his undergraduate degree and Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Tennessee. While at UT he was on the rifle team where he excelled as a sharpshooter and marksman. He was instrumental in his team winning the Southeast Conference Collegiate Rifle Competitions. His love of guns and animals was a significant part of his life. He loved sitting and watching the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, turkey and many other animals that came onto the back of his yard in downtown Dickson. He loved his Doberman Pinscher, “Andy”, a magnificent animal who was his pride and joy and constant companion.

J.M. also had a demon in the middle part of his life when he had a love affair with Jack Daniels whiskey, but on October 19, 1990, he divorced Jack Daniels and never drank another drop of alcohol. He then became involved in the 12-step AA program where he and his wife, Lisa, helped many others deal with their addiction. He also served on the board of directors for the local AA Chapter.

J. M. is survived by his wife, Lisa, who has been by his side for the late 38 years and who has been a devoted caretaker during his recent health issues. He is also survived by his special dog “Andy”. His late parents were Joseph Malcolm Clement, Sr. a local pharmacist, and Earline “Jackie” Lockhart Clement. He had two daughters by a former marriage and three grandchildren. He had one sister, JoAnn Goddard.

J. M. was a real character. He was an affable person, highly intelligent, a fixer of anything in need of repair, able to communicate on any level and he appreciated his friends. He lived his life on his terms. In his was he enjoyed life and was happy.

At his request his remains were cremated and due to Covid-19 restrictions there will be no public service or visitation.

Any remembrances may be made to the Humane Society of Dickson County, 311 Tennsco Drive, Dickson, TN. 37055 in his memory.
