The Reverend William Mayes Holt, Episcopal priest and beloved family man, died from cancer at his home in Dickson, Tennessee on February 4, 2021 at the age of 81. He was born on September 12, 1939 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Grace Marie (Mayes) and J.P. Montgomery Holt. His father died serving in the U.S. Air Forces during World War II when Will was 5 years old.

Will was employed by American Airlines when he married Patricia Faye Harper of Nashville, TN, in December 1966. His calling to become an Episcopal priest was fulfilled when he graduated from The School of Theology at The University of the South in Sewanee, TN, in 1973. He served as Assistant Rector at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lookout Mountain, TN, and then as Vicar at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Bristol, TN. In 1983, he moved his family to Dickson, TN, where he served as Vicar at St. James Episcopal Church for 25 years. He continued to serve the Episcopal Church after retirement at Calvary Episcopal in Cumberland Furnace, TN, and at Grace Church in Paris, TN.

Will is survived by his wife Patricia, his children John Michael Christian Holt, Allison Holt May, and Nathan Prescott Montgomery Holt, as well as his granddaughter Violet Harper May.

A devoted dad and a joyous and adoring grandpa, he loved whitewater rafting, kayaking, and canoeing, as well as vehicle repair and restoration. He especially admired classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Will’s taste in music varied from The Choir of King’s College Cambridge to Willie Nelson, The Eagles, Credence Clearwater Revival, Paul Simon, and John Prine. He was a loyal listener of Nashville Public Radio and Prairie Home Companion. His intellectual curiosity and love of reading was boundless, ranging from Jungian psychology to the Tao Te Ching, from the poetry of Rumi to the essays of Wendell Berry. Will’s friends, neighbors, and parishioners became family, and he valued staying in touch with the numerous fascinating and caring people he met throughout the years.

Memorial service will be planned on a later date.

Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen.
