Barbara Trowell went to be with the Lord March 24, 2021 at the home of her daughter, Pamela Renew in Dickson, Tennessee.

December 6, 1922 Dewey and Alice Mayforth hurried to Brigham Women’s Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts where their first daughter, Barbara Jean was born.  Robustly healthy with blonde hair and blue-eyes, Barbara was soon joined by brother, Robert Walter followed by Aurelia Marguerite (Peg), and Joseph Brigham.  Life was not easy, but their happy home abounded with laughter and love.

As a young girl Barbara loved to dance standing on top of her father’s shoes and

especially enjoyed visiting her grandfather, Joseph Walter Brigham, who stood very straight and taught himself to play the violin and piano.  They walked to the public library almost daily, and often stopped at the drug store for ice cream.

During the Depression the Mayforth family moved to Indian Rocks Beach, Florida to be near Barbara’s grandmother, Mae Fife.  Most mornings before school she swam with wild porpoises in the Gulf of Mexico.   After graduation from Clearwater High School at the beginning of World War II she was a typist at Foster Engineering in Newark, New Jersey where her grandfather was an engineering draftsman.

Later, after the family moved to Lakeland, Florida she trained as a telephone operator, and met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Trowell, a handsome soldier who swept her off her feet; three months later they were married on July 6, 1946.  Five daughters were born over the next eighteen years: Brenda Alice, Karen Ann, Pamela Sue, Kimberlee Lucille, and Barbara (Barbie) Lee.

Barbara embraced motherhood and homemaking, there were always snacks waiting for girls after school.  In addition to making school lunches, washing five heads of hair each week, ironing, starching petticoats and carpooling, she made time to serve as room-mother for each of her girls’ classes and taught Sunday School at Church of the Ascension (Episcopal).  The girls had no idea how hard it was for Mom and Dad in the early days – but they always knew they were loved.

Dewey died and Alice came to live with Barbara and Bob.  For seven years Barbara lovingly cared for Bob until he died from Lymphoma while they were living in their dream home in Franklin, North Carolina.  Terribly lonely without Bob, Barbara continued to care for her mother until her death at the age of ninety-one.  Three years-ago she grieved the loss of her youngest daughter, Barbie, from Cancer.

For the last 40 years, more or less, she has shared a home with her daughter Pam, most recently in Dickson, Tennessee.  Barbara loved the Church where she served on the Altar Guild.  Some of her favorite things were spending time with her family, reading, listening to music, telling the stories of her life, collecting Crosses and glass Angels, changing of the seasons, and walking on the beach.  She was a true friend and confidant, fun-loving and enjoyed a good laugh.
