Carolyn Sue King Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025. She was born in Bethpage, Tennessee on October 8, 1936, to the late Floyd Edward King and Virginia Allen Adkins-King.
A graduate of Goodlettsville High School, Sue married the love of her life, B.J. Smith, on her 18th birthday. Dr. Smith (Doc) and Sue Sue (as her family affectionately referred to her) were married for 67 years. During Doc’s years in medical school, she worked as a bank teller, supporting their young family with dedication and grace.
Sue had a love for gardening among other passions. She found joy in the simple pleasures of walking, tending her yard, and traveling alongside her husband. A devoted reader and lifelong learner, she also enjoyed playing bridge for a time. She was also an active member of the Walnut Street Church of Christ in Dickson, Tennessee.
Above all, Sue was a loving and devoted homemaker whose greatest joy was her family. She was a wonderful mother to her four children, as her commitment to her family always came first. Though a private person, her quiet strength and unwavering love created a warm and welcoming home for all who entered.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Lydia Annis (Ann) Mayhugh and Margaret Alice Lovelass.
She is survived by her loving sister, Amelia Long; her children, Barry Smith (Jackie), Brantley Smith (Elizabeth), Lynne Rhett (Moore), and Deborah Smith; her cherished grandchildren, Jonathan Smith (Amara), Rylee Smith, Ellie Smith, Halle Smith, Hayden Smith, Caroline Sloan (Benson), and Sharon Hale (Dayton); and great-grandchildren, Dayton Hale IV, Elysabeth Hale, Lynne Sloan, and Benson Sloan.
Sue is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren, each of whom she loved dearly.
Her legacy of kindness, quiet strength, and devotion to family will live on through the generations she helped shape. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
