Job Description

We are seeking a licensed and experienced Funeral Director / Undertaker to join our dedicated team. The ideal candidate will be a compassionate and meticulous individual responsible for guiding families through the entire funeral process, from the first call to the final disposition. This role requires a unique blend of empathy, strong organizational skills, and a deep understanding of the technical and legal aspects of funeral service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Family Consultation and Arrangement:
    • Meet with bereaved families in a professional and empathetic manner to arrange and plan funeral services.
    • Provide guidance on service options, merchandise (caskets, urns, vaults), and associated costs.
    • Prepare and process all necessary legal documents, including death certificates, burial permits, and veterans’ benefits forms.
    • Coordinate service details with clergy, cemeteries, crematories, and other third-party vendors.
  • Mortuary and Preparatory Care:
    • Perform or oversee the transfer of the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home.
    • Perform embalming, dressing, cosmetizing, and casketing of the deceased in accordance with the highest professional standards and family wishes.
    • Ensure strict adherence to all health and safety regulations, including OSHA standards.
  • Funeral Service Direction:
    • Oversee and direct all aspects of visitations, wakes, funeral services, and memorial services.
    • Ensure the funeral home facilities are clean, presentable, and prepared for services.
    • Lead funeral processions and direct committal services at the cemetery or crematory.
    • Provide support and guidance to grieving families and guests during services.
  • Administrative and Operational Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records and case files.
    • Assist with the management of funeral home inventory and supplies.
    • Participate in an on-call rotation for nights, weekends, and holidays to respond to first calls.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Mortuary Science or Funeral Service Education from an accredited institution (ABFSE).
  • Licensing: Must hold a current and valid Funeral Director and/or Embalmer license in the state of [Your State].
  • Experience: A minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a licensed Funeral Director is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to show compassion and empathy.
    • Impeccable attention to detail and outstanding organizational abilities.
    • Ability to remain calm, professional, and composed in emotionally charged situations.
    • Proficient knowledge of laws and regulations governing the funeral service industry.
    • A valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and funeral home management software is a plus.

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • This position requires working in both office and mortuary environments.
  • The role involves long periods of standing and walking.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a significant amount of weight (at least 75 lbs).
  • Flexibility to work an irregular schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and an on-call rotation is essential.
