Coach Larry Elton Overby, 88, passed away on March 17, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee. His wishes were to be cremated, and a private family celebration of life will be held on a future date.

Born on February 27, 1937, in Old Hillsboro (Leiper’s Fork), Tennessee, Larry dedicated his life to education, athletics, and family. He was a proud graduate of Antioch High School before earning his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Tech University and furthering his education with a master’s degree plus 45 additional hours at Tennessee State University.

Larry devoted his career to shaping young minds as a high school teacher and coach. From 1959 to 1986, he taught and coached football and girls’ track at Madison High School. Following that tenure, he continued his passion for coaching football at Stratford High School until his retirement. His impact on students and athletes spanned decades, earning him the enduring respect of those he mentored.

Beyond the classroom and field, Larry had a deep appreciation for collecting and dealing Case knives. He was also an avid fisherman who spent many cherished years enjoying the sport alongside his beloved wife, Eleanor Jones Overby. Together, they shared a love for antiques and furniture refinishing, turning their passion into a meaningful pursuit.

Larry was a devoted husband to Eleanor until her passing and a loving father to Kirby Overby (Lynne), Cissy Byrne (Randy), and Amy Adams (Mark). He was also a proud grandfather to Justin Byrne, Katie Byrne, Larry T. Overby, and Abby Adams. He is survived by his sister Mary Jane Carter (William) and was predeceased by his parents Kirby and Ellen Overby and his sister Anna Marilyn McGown.

Larry’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as an educator, coach, father, grandfather, and friend. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
