Mr. Walter Hix Choate, age 85, passed away on December 13, 2025, at NHC nursing home, with his daughter Pam by his side.
Born in Dickson County he was the son of the late Holland Choate and Gertrude Parchman Choate and he was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard “Gabe” Choate, Dennis Choate, Jerry Choate, Eddie Choate; his son-in-law Ronnie Cauthen.
Hix’s greatest pride and joy were his children, whom he loved unconditionally. Hix married the love of his life, Rosa Guthrie, 65 years ago. Hix loved his six grandchildren unconditionally along with his 11 great grandchildren.
Hix coached several softball teams as his daughters grew up. He even had a team that his daughter Penny was on that went to the World Series in Texas. When his daughter, Pam, decided to run for election, he was her number one supporter, and he campaigned for her like there was no tomorrow. He was so proud of his three daughters.
Hix was a hard worker. Hix did construction work with Hardaway Construction. When he retired, he worked for the Dickson County Government at the Convenience Site on Eno Road, Dickson Tennessee. He loved working at the convenience site because he loved meeting people, his friends came to see him and even brought their pets for him to see.
Hix loved animals, his chickens, dogs, and cats. He even had cats at the convenience site that he fed every time he was there to work.
Hix loved to go hunting for ginseng. He loved going to Charles Woodard Auctions or auctions in general. At auctions, he would bid on things that he didn’t really need thinking that maybe someone could use it or need it in the future. He loved to have a bidding war with a great friend, over a box of dishes. Sometimes he would let his friend win the box of dishes. When Mr. Joe Sweatt, his nephew-in-law, was the auctioneer, he would stand close to him so he could pull on Joe’s pants’ leg to let him know that he wanted that item.
Walter Hix Choate would help anyone that needed help. He never meet a stranger. If he told you he would help you, you can bet he would do so. He was known for his word being good as gold.
Hix was a man of little words, but his smile was priceless.
Survived by his wife of 65 years, Rosa Guthrie Choate; children: Pattie Cauthen, Pam Lewis (Jerry), Penny Whitaker (Kenneth); six grandchildren: Brandy Cauthen (Kyle Gordon) , Justin Myatt (Logan Springer), Jessica Perry (Josh), Tashawna Lowe (Richard “JR”), Mason Whitaker, Rylan Whitaker; 11 great grandchildren; Sisters: Janice Leatherwood (Charles), Eva Neil Jones; a host of nieces and nephews.
