Mr. James Walter Nicks, age 87, of Dickson, TN died at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, October 6, 2023.

James Walter Nicks was born in Dickson, TN 1936.  He met Sarah Margaret Mitchell of Centerville, TN in 1954 at Montgomery Bell Park where he was working as a lifeguard.  For their first date he drove to Centerville in a new yellow convertible he borrowed from his brother.  From then on it was a love story for all times.  Walter graduated from Dickson High School in 1955 and proposed to Margaret.  They began 68 wonderful years of marriage by eloping to Corinth, Mississippi in July 1955.   They honeymooned at the Loveless Hotel.

After marrying, he worked at Western Electric and then entered civil service with the U.S. Air Force as an electrician and a logistics specialist.  Walter and Margaret travelled from project to project - hauling their new family along with a trailer as their home.  His favorite job was leading a team of electricians that wired Mercury spacecraft and various launch vehicles (rockets) for NASA’s manned space missions in the 1960s.  They lived in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Missouri.

Margaret and Walter retired in 1988 and returned to Dickson County where they built a house on South Eno Road. Walter led a life of gardening, golf, and God.  He grew tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, okra, and squash each year.  He golfed at Montgomery Bell with an 11 handicap and hit two hole-in-one shots.  He and his golfing buddies went to Augusta, Georgia to watch the Masters Tournament numerous times.  Walter and Margaret attended Walnut Street Church of Christ.  They were part of many committees and loved their Church Community.

Margaret began suffering from dementia in 2017 and eventually passed away on March 22, 2023.  Walter was devastated and never recovered. From his broken heart. He passed away in his sleep at his home with his children on October 6, 2023.  Walter and Margaret are survived by their two children, James W. Nicks, Jr. (wife, Karen McKeehan) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Lou Ann (Nicks) McFadden (husband, Michael McFadden) of Dickson, TN.

Special thanks to our wonderful caregivers – Laura Caldwell, Nicole Manning, and Caitlyn Warrington.  Also, thanks to Accent Home Hospice,  Nurse Mark Trent and home aid extraordinaire – Chanda Givens.  Without them we would not have been able to care for Dad at home and will be forever grateful.
