Wilma Jean Carr Satterfield, age 90, of Dickson, Tennessee, departed this life on Thursday, June 5th, 2025, after a three-month battle with squamous cell carcinoma of the lungs.
Born February 22,1935, the youngest child of Albert and Cora Carr in Dickson, Tennessee, Wilma suffered the loss of her mother Cora in 1940 at the age of 5. Two years later, at the age of 7, she was struck by a car, driven by a man yelling racist slurs as she walked near her family home. Soon after, her father, Albert Carr, enlisted the help of Cora's sister Callie O'Dell Henry (Gordan), to raise Wilma and her sister Beulah. The values she learned from her Aunt Callie would help to shape the rest of her life.
She was a proud member of the Hampton High School class of 1954 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Education, from Tennessee State University in 1961.
Wilma Satterfield was an elite educator in the Memphis area and the Metro Nashville School System for 41 years where she taught at several schools including Gower Elementary, Jones Paideia Elementary, Moses Mckissack Middle School, and Buena Vista Middle School. She had a distinguished career, winning multiple awards for Teacher of the Year with students consistently posting the highest scores in Metro Nashville for reading competency. She was a strong promoter of education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to always aim higher. She enjoyed sewing, reading, crafts and painting her nails. In later years she ran her own “get out the vote” campaign and never missed an opportunity to encourage local youth to reach for their dreams and strive to meet their full potential.
Wilma Satterfield received Christ at an early age and was a member of Saint James AME Church in Dickson for many years until she married Pastor James E Satterfield II. At which time, she moved her membership to The Original Church of God Dickson, now the Greater Faith Fellowship Church, where she served as first lady for 39 years. Over the course of her life, she evolved into a giver. For many years she would purchase fruit bags and gifts for every single member of Greater Faith Fellowship at Christmas. She gave money to help countless young people go to college and gave away many towels and handkerchiefs to preachers and pastors around America.
She is preceded in death by her husband Elder James E. Satterfield II along with five brothers Doyle, Gene, Bellfield, Charles, Nay Hue and one Sister Beulah Carr.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories one brother Waymon Battle, three loving and devoted sons, James Edward III (Kimberly), Kelven O’dale (Natasha), and Jeremiah (Tabitha) Satterfield and an engrafted son, Corey Devonchea Shipp of Los Angeles, California.
Devoted grandchildren listed are Steadman (Brittnea), Jarius, Jayden, Kenedi, Kierra, Kristian, Jordyn, Roxton, Payton, and Oliver.
